The Funeral Is Paid Before The Grief Is.

Final expense life insurance is a small whole life policy — $2,000 to $50,000 at the carriers we list, premiums that never rise — that pays cash to the person you name once the claim is approved. We explain it in your language, check the door that costs less first, and never hide the waiting period.

The week after

What Actually Happens In The First Thirty Days

A funeral comes due in days. Savings in a bank or an estate can take months. The gap in between is what this policy is for — scroll and watch the week fill in.

Day 1The funeral home asks how the services will be paid. Most want a deposit before the service.
Day 2–3Family starts calling: who has savings, who can put it on a card. A life insurance claim is filed with a death certificate.
Day 5–10Carriers generally pay a complete claim promptly once they receive the death certificate and claim form.
Day 30The last medical bills and utilities arrive. Whatever is left of the policy covers them.
Month 2–6Savings in a bank or estate account can stay frozen until probate clears — the reason families buy a policy that pays in days, not months.

Why Cash, Not A Funeral-Home Contract

Final expense pays cash to your beneficiary. They can use any funeral home, or none, and whatever is left covers the last bills. Pre-need contracts tie the money to one funeral home; the FTC Funeral Rule still gives you an itemized price list either way.

Two doors, one honest difference

A Few Health Questions, Or None At All

Usually costs less

Door One: Final Expense With A Few Questions

No exam. A short list of yes/no health questions. If approved, the full amount is payable from day one. Many people over 50 with managed conditions qualify — and pay less. NerdWallet's 2026 example for a 60-year-old woman buying $20,000: $744 a year.

Door Two: Guaranteed Acceptance

Acceptance guaranteed inside the age band, whatever your health. The trade: a two-year graded benefit (three at Fidelity Life) during which natural death returns premiums plus interest instead of the face amount. Accidents pay in full from day one. Same example: $1,008 a year.

The fallback, explained up frontWe only offer this door after checking door one.

Graded rules from Mutual of Omaha, Gerber Life, Corebridge Direct, Fidelity Life. Price example: NerdWallet, Sept 2026. We always check the first door before offering the second.

Which Door First? Three Taps

Not a quote and not underwriting — just the order a licensed agent would try, from the carriers' published rules.

Rules from carrier materials, Oct 2026: guaranteed acceptance bands 45–85 (50–85 at several carriers), amounts typically to $25,000; final expense with health questions typically 50–85 and to $50,000. The carrier's application decides.

Buying A Policy For Mom Or Dad

Many of the people who call us are adult children arranging it for a parent — often in a second language. You can own and pay for the policy, with your parent's knowledge and signature, and name yourself beneficiary so the money lands with the person who will be paying the funeral home. We walk you both through it, in whichever language each of you prefers.

  • Insurable interest: a parent–child relationship satisfies it
  • Your parent answers any health questions; you handle the paperwork
  • Premiums are level for life; the policy never expires while paid
  • Agents in English, Spanish and Portuguese on the same call

Questions People Ask

What is final expense insurance, in one sentence?

A small whole life policy — usually $2,000 to $50,000 at the carriers we list — that pays cash to the person you name once the claim is approved, so a funeral and the last bills are covered before the grief is.

Do I have to answer health questions?

That is the choice. One door asks a few yes/no questions (no exam) and usually costs less, with the full benefit from day one if approved. The other door asks nothing, accepts you by age, and pays a graded benefit for natural death in the first two to three years. We check the first door before offering the second.

How much does a funeral cost?

The NFDA's most recent published study (2023) put the median at $8,300 with viewing and burial and $6,280 with viewing and cremation, funeral-home goods and services only. Cemetery, marker, flowers and obituaries are typically separate.

Does Social Security pay for a funeral?

It pays a one-time $255 lump-sum death payment to an eligible surviving spouse or child. Nothing more.

Can I buy a policy for my mother or father?

Yes, with their knowledge and signature. You can own and pay for the policy and name yourself beneficiary; the carrier requires insurable interest, which a parent–child relationship satisfies. The parent answers any health questions.

Can I apply if I do not have a Social Security number?

Carrier rules differ and change; several require an SSN or ITIN. Tell the agent your situation up front and they will say which carriers can consider the application. We never ask for an SSN on this website.
